Taha'a Vanilla vs Bourbon Vanilla: What's the Difference?

Two Distinct Botanical Species

Taha'a vanilla comes from the Vanilla tahitensis orchid, grown in French Polynesia. Bourbon vanilla, on the other hand, is derived from Vanilla planifolia, the historic species from Madagascar and Reunion Island.

This difference in species alone accounts for most of the contrasts in aroma and texture between the two vanillas.

Opposite Aromatic Profiles

Taha'a vanilla captivates with floral, fruity and slightly anise-like notes, almost praline-like. It is a highly fragrant vanilla, prized for its finesse.

Bourbon vanilla, by contrast, develops woodier, warmer and more chocolatey aromas, with the classic vanilla note everyone recognises.

The Pod: Plump vs Dry

Taha'a pods are noticeably plumper, oilier and more supple, filled with a grain-rich pulp. Bourbon pods are generally thinner and drier.

Which One to Choose?

For an exceptional aromatic signature on creams, delicate desserts or original savoury pairings, Taha'a vanilla makes the difference. Bourbon remains a reliable choice for the traditional vanilla note.
